Optical Illusions

Here is a collection of various optical illusions, or are they??   Enjoy!!

 

Fraser's Spiral

 

The picture above depicts Fraser's Spiral. But if you place the mouse over it, it becomes obvious that there are no spirals.

Blind Spot

Sit at arms length from the screen, close your right eye then stare at the right (blue) dot below. Without moving your eye from the right dot, concentrate on the left (red) dot then move slowly towards the screen. At approximately 18 inches the left (red) dot will disappear from view. Continue to move forwards towards the screen and the left (red) dot will eventually re-appear.

You can repeat his procedure using right eye and by staring at the left (red) dot.






Why do the dots disappear?

Each eye has a blind spot where the optic nerve meets the back of the eyeball. These blind spots have no light receptors and each is offset from the centre of the eyeball. The offset of the left eye is to the right and vice versa for the right eye. Thus the blind spots of each eye do not overlap and the area of each blind spot is compensated for by light receptors in the other eye.

Inverted Flag or is it?

You may have a pretty good idea of what is going to happen in this illusion. Stare at the center of the flag for at least 20 second - even longer to enhance the effect - and then move the mouse over the image, a light colored wall, or a white peice of paper.

 

 

Now try this - try it again, but this time don't stare at the center. Move your eyes over to the right or left. Then, when you are looking at the after image of the flag, as your eyes try to focus on it, you'll see that they can't, and the flag will continue to slide around in your vision. As you may have guessed, this is because the image is burned into a certain place on your eye, and as you naturally will try to focus on the center and get it to stop moving, it will move around even more.

 

You've probably seen something similiar when you look at a bright light or even the sun.

Look at the dot at the center of the image, then move your head closer to the monitor.

The Enigma

Stare at the center of the figure for a while. Some ‘szintillating’ activity will build up in the violet and blue annuli. Some observers also report a circular rotation within these regions; things will begin to “run around in circles”.

Straight or not?

Are the horizontal lines parallel?



Answer: Yes.

To verify, use a sheet of paper against the monitor to compare.

Can you see it?

Stare closely to see an image begin to appear!!

After effects!!

Concentrate on the center of the images for about 20 - 30 seconds.

Then without moving your eyes, move the mouse over the image and see what happens.

Stationary Image?

The following images are not animated. Your eyes are making it move. To test this, stare at one spot for a couple seconds and everything will stop moving.

 

Look at the black center of each circle and it will stop moving. But move your eyes to the next black center and the previous will move after you take your eyes away from it.
