C1900 FAQ

Question: We have the non-upgradeable version (C1901J) recorder and we now have a need for the missing relay for an alarm. Do we need to buy the upgradeable version (C1911J) to replace our existing recorder or is there a way to modify or upgrade this unit with the relay output?

Answer: Since the C1901J is considered a non-upgradeable basic single pen recorder, the "official" factory answer would be: Yes, a new upgradable recorder (C1911J) is required if use of a relay output is required.

The truth is that we are able to upgrade your existing unit. In fact, the missing relay circuit is very small, and anyone with excellent soldering skills can populate the parts required to add the relay output circuit.

The upgrade consists of two parts:
      1) The physical components that need to be soldered in place
      2) Manipulating the instruments software to acknowledge the new relay circuit.

      PART 1:
The relay circuit consists of seven (7) components and they are located in the bottom left corner of the Processor Board next to the Terminal Block (See photos below).

        Relay & related parts unpopulated
        Standard factory version (C1901J)

        Relay & related parts populated
        Modified version (XC1901J)

The following table lists the specific parts required:

      PART 2:
Since the 1901J was meant as a bare bones recorder with basically no options available. The software will not allow you access to much of the program that is available with the standard 1911J model.
In order to get around this, we must re-commission the unit to a 1911J model. This will allow access to the programming of the relay.

The following detailed steps will help you re-commission the instrument.

Please keep in mind that this procedure is NOT in any published manuals. This is a "factory" only procedure. Follow these steps carefully, for you may accidentally render your unit useless if you change any other parameters.

      Detailed Steps:

      1)

Turn off the Security Link LK3, two pin jumper installed in lower position. (Processor Board: Top, Center)

      2)

      Press until you see

Press once and you will see a screen like , now press either or until you see

      13)

Press until you see , then press until you see . The unit is now configured as a 1911J recorder. The next few steps are needed to set the units software to a set standard, to eliminate any possible programming issues.

      14)

      Press until you see

      15)
